My family passionately LOVES sandwiches of every kind. And before food allergy and celiac diagnoses’ we definitely ate our weight in them.
When my kiddos were ten and three, we had just read Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends for the umpteenth time. Shortly afterward we were sitting at the kitchen table eating sandwiches when they professed their love of one of their favorite foods and had a blast creating this silly little poem:
Sandwiches, Sandwiches
Sandwiches, sandwiches, they are so yummy,
Sandwiches, sandwiches, feel good in my tummy.
Sandwiches, sandwiches, they are so fine,
Sandwiches, sandwiches, I’m so glad they’re mine.
Sandwiches, sandwiches, full of cheese and butter,
Sandwiches, sandwiches, they’re best made by mother.
Sandwiches, sandwiches two slices of bread,
Sandwiches, sandwiches, big as my head.
Sandwiches, sandwiches, smothered in jelly,
Sandwiches, sandwiches, fill up my belly.
Sandwiches, sandwiches, bursting with meat,
Sandwiches, sandwiches, they are so neat.
The sandwich pictured above was created by my oldest when he was eight and inspired by a recipe in one of his kids cookbooks. It will forever be known as his “Big Sandwich”. If it’s making you as hungry as it’s making me, ingredients are as follows:
1 loaf French Bread
1 tub cream cheese, mixed with ranch dressing mix
Sliced cheddar and provolone
Smoked turkey and Black Forest ham
Lettuce, tomato, thinly sliced cucumber, shredded carrots
